2002, the Museum was given the building that houses the original studio of Grant Wood. Located just three blocks from the Museum, the loft studio, known by its fictitious address of 5 Turner Alley, was designed and constructed by Wood, who lived and worked there between 1924 and 1935. It was here that he painted American Gothic (1930)—now part of the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago—and many of his most famous paintings. The Grant Wood Studio is open to the public for guided tours from 12:00 PM-4:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays from April through December.
Lovely renovated art museum. Major showcase for Grant Wood who grew up in this area. His work reflects the people, the place and the emotional tenor of life in this area.
The museum itself carries the multiple burdens of education, showplace and cultural repository remarkably well. Cedar Rapids has much to be proud of here and I expect to be a regular visitor.
We went during the free summer option. The atmosphere is quiet and respectful but yet encourages one to visit with others about the art and the artists. I especially love the little plaques beside the picture that not only explain the picture but also the life of the artists. Friendly staff makes it a must visit when in downtown cedar rapids!!!
Some of the local architecture art was quite stunning and beautiful, understated elegance. Alway a great place to visit.
Had a great time walking through and looking at the different art. The staff was so helpful and gave amazing advice.
Saw the Power and Impact exhibition. Such talented black artists in Iowa! Beautiful art, beautiful building, and outstanding gift shop with wearable art as well as items to display in your home. Plan to do my Christmas shopping there.
How many of us go to visit art museums and other similar activities when we go out of town, yet have never visited our own museums? Don't skip out on the Cedar Rapids Art Museum! They have a lovely collection of Grant Wood and other artists. It is a must see! The gift shop is nice too.
This is an excellent museum to see several local artists - including Grant Wood. We visited during the week so it was not crowded. It was a nice place to visit during a very hot July day. My out-of-state visitors found really interesting, too (at least that is what they posted on Facebook). No admission charge when we went and free parking in the lot in back.
